A detailed etching by Matthijs Pool depicting a peasant woman with a pipe and container, framed within an oval cartouche with Dutch and Latin inscriptions.
This etching by Matthijs Pool depicts a peasant woman engaged in a moment of quiet amusement. The composition is framed within an oval cartouche, a common device in Dutch printmaking that draws the eye directly to the subject. The woman holds a small pipe in one hand and an open container, or test, in the other. Her expression is one of mirth, suggesting a narrative element often found in the genre scenes of the period. The surrounding stone-like masonry and the decorative base, which includes a Dutch inscription, provide a sense of architectural structure to the print.
Pool, an engraver active in Amsterdam, demonstrates a high level of technical control in the rendering of textures. The folds of the woman's garment, the smooth surface of the container, and the rougher texture of the stone wall are all achieved through varied hatching and cross-hatching techniques. The Latin inscription surrounding the oval, 'EPULAS SINE CADE ET SANGUINE PREBET', adds a layer of moral or philosophical commentary, a frequent feature in seventeenth and eighteenth-century Dutch art. The Dutch text at the base provides a colloquial context for the scene, grounding the image in the everyday life of the populace.
This work reflects the interest in character studies and genre subjects that persisted in the Netherlands long after the height of the Dutch Golden Age. The print is an example of the collaborative nature of the print trade, where engravers often reproduced or interpreted themes popularised by painters. The clarity of the line work and the balanced composition make this a fine example of the period's graphic output, offering a glimpse into the social observations of the time.
