A detailed 1771 etching by Georg Friedrich Schmidt, depicting Rembrandt van Rijn in his later years with characteristic fur-trimmed attire.
This etching by Georg Friedrich Schmidt, dated 1771, presents a study of the Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn. Schmidt, a German engraver who spent significant time in Paris and Saint Petersburg, demonstrates his technical proficiency through the application of line and tone. The work is based on Rembrandt's own self-portraiture, capturing the subject in his later years with a fur-trimmed garment and a distinctive beret.
Schmidt employs a varied hatching technique to define the textures of the fur, the fabric of the hat, and the weathered features of the face. The lighting is directed to focus on the sitter, creating a sense of volume and presence. The inscription at the bottom indicates that the print was dedicated to Monsieur B.N. Le Sueur, reflecting the social and professional networks of eighteenth-century printmakers. The artist includes a reference to the original source, noting the influence of Rembrandt's own hand in the composition.
As a printmaker, Schmidt was known for his ability to translate the painterly qualities of oil works into the medium of etching. This piece shows his attention to the nuances of light and shadow, which were central to the Dutch Golden Age style he sought to emulate. The composition remains faithful to the introspective nature of Rembrandt's late self-portraits, offering a view into the character of the artist as perceived by a later generation of printmakers. The work is a clear example of the eighteenth-century interest in the masters of the previous century, demonstrating how print culture allowed for the dissemination and study of historical art across Europe.
