A decorative illustration by Bernard Willem Wierink depicting a scene from the medieval Reynaert the Fox cycle, featuring the fox in monk's attire.
This illustration by Bernard Willem Wierink depicts a scene from the medieval beast epic, Van den vos Reynaerde. The fox, Reynaert, is shown in a monk's habit, holding a letter and a seal, standing before Canteclaer the rooster and his family. The composition is structured as a decorative panel, typical of early twentieth-century book illustration, with a clear division between the narrative scene and a blank space intended for text.
Wierink employs a linear style, using thin ink outlines to define the figures of the fox and the poultry. The use of coloured pencil adds subtle tones to the brickwork, the foliage, and the animals, while maintaining the transparency of a preparatory sketch. The fox is framed by a halo-like arch, a visual device that lends a mock-religious gravity to the trickster figure. The lower section features a secondary register of chickens, grounding the scene within a naturalistic yet stylised environment.
The work reflects the interest in folklore and national identity prevalent in Dutch art during this period. Wierink, known for his work as a teacher and illustrator, often drew upon traditional narratives to create accessible, decorative imagery. The presence of the 'Pl. VI' notation in the upper corner suggests this was part of a larger series of plates, likely intended for a published edition of the Reynaert cycle. The drawing retains the character of a working document, with visible grid lines and annotations, offering a view into the artist's process of balancing narrative clarity with ornamental design.
