A detailed etching by Allaert van Everdingen depicting a scene from the Reynard the Fox fable, featuring the fox mounted on a donkey.
This etching by Allaert van Everdingen depicts a scene from the medieval beast epic, Reynard the Fox. The composition features the cunning fox, Reynard, mounted upon a donkey, surrounded by his animal associates. Van Everdingen, a Dutch Golden Age artist known for his mastery of printmaking and his interest in Northern European folklore, employs a precise etching technique to define the textures of animal fur and the surrounding foliage. The work reflects the popularity of satirical animal fables in seventeenth-century Dutch culture, where such narratives often served as allegories for human behaviour and social hierarchies.
The artist uses varied line weights to create depth within the scene. The foreground figures are rendered with clear, deliberate strokes, while the background elements, including the distant hills and trees, are suggested through lighter, more atmospheric hatching. This contrast directs the viewer's attention to the central figures, capturing a moment of narrative tension. The donkey, adorned with a decorative saddle and plumes, stands in contrast to the more rugged appearance of the bear and the wolf, who accompany the fox.
Van Everdingen was particularly noted for his ability to integrate figures into natural settings, a skill evident in this print. The trees overhead provide a frame for the group, grounding the fantastical subject matter in a recognisable, albeit stylised, environment. The print demonstrates the technical proficiency of the artist, who was also a painter of mountain scenes and coastal views. This work belongs to a series of illustrations that brought the Reynard cycle to a wider audience, maintaining the satirical bite of the original literary source through visual storytelling. The print remains a fine example of the narrative print tradition in the Netherlands, combining technical skill with a keen eye for characterisation.
