Lucebert, the pseudonym of Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk, was a central figure in the post-war Dutch art scene. As a poet and painter, his work often bridges the gap between linguistic expression and visual form. This piece, titled Rauchers, dates to 1956, a period when his involvement with the CoBrA movement had already shaped his approach to spontaneity and raw, unmediated creativity.

The composition features a central, hybrid figure that defies anatomical logic. Its form is constructed through fluid, confident ink lines that suggest both animal and human traits. The creature appears to be in motion, with limbs that taper into sharp, claw-like extremities. A smaller, more rigid pair of figures stands to the lower right, providing a stark contrast to the dominant, organic form above. The background remains largely empty, allowing the focus to rest entirely on the interplay of the ink strokes and the negative space.

Lucebert utilised a variety of mark-making techniques here, ranging from clean, continuous outlines to dense, hatched shading that adds texture to the creature's body. The cloud-like shape floating in the upper section introduces an element of surrealism, typical of his output during this decade. The work reflects a rejection of traditional academic constraints, favouring instead a direct, almost childlike honesty in its execution. By stripping away unnecessary detail, the artist forces the viewer to engage with the immediate energy of the drawing.
