This oil on canvas painting by Carl Bloch depicts the biblical scene of the Raising of Lazarus. The artist's dramatic use of light and shadow enhances the emotional intensity of the scene.
Carl Bloch, a Danish painter active in the 19th century, is best known for his religious scenes. He received his early training at the Royal Danish Academy of Art and continued his studies in Italy, where he spent several years. His style combines academic realism with a dramatic use of light and shadow, influenced by the Old Masters. Bloch's paintings were commissioned for the Chapel at Frederiksborg Castle, and they gained widespread popularity through reproductions. 'Raising of Lazarus' depicts the biblical episode where Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead. The composition centres on Jesus, who stands at the entrance of the tomb with an outstretched arm. Lazarus is shown emerging from the tomb, assisted by figures who remove the stone. The scene is filled with onlookers, some in awe and others in disbelief. Bloch's use of chiaroscuro, the contrast between light and dark, heightens the drama of the event. The figures are rendered with careful attention to detail, conveying a sense of realism and emotional intensity.
