Bloch's paintings were commissioned for the Chapel at Frederiksborg Castle, and they gained widespread popularity through reproductions. 'Raising of Lazarus' depicts the biblical episode where Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead. The composition centres on Jesus, who stands at the entrance of the tomb with an outstretched arm. Lazarus is shown emerging from the tomb, assisted by figures who remove the stone. The scene is filled with onlookers, some in awe and others in disbelief. Bloch's use of chiaroscuro, the contrast between light and dark, heightens the drama of the event. The figures are rendered with careful attention to detail, conveying a sense of realism and emotional intensity.
