A delicate Symbolist work by Konstantin Somov, featuring figures in period dress observing a rainbow against a dramatic, stormy sky.
Konstantin Somov, a founding member of the Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) group, created this work in 1908. The composition reflects the artist's fascination with the eighteenth-century aesthetic, blending historical nostalgia with the melancholic sensibilities of the Symbolist movement. In this scene, figures dressed in period attire stand beneath the dense, dark canopy of a tree, observing a rainbow that arches across a stormy, bruised sky.
The contrast between the muted, earthy tones of the foreground and the ethereal, luminous arc of the rainbow creates a sense of detachment. Somov employs a delicate, precise technique, particularly in the rendering of the foliage and the textures of the garments. The figures appear as if they are actors on a stage, removed from the immediate reality of the weather. This theatrical quality is a hallmark of Somov's output, where the boundary between artifice and nature remains intentionally blurred.
The work captures a fleeting moment of atmospheric change. By placing the figures in a state of quiet contemplation, Somov invites the viewer to consider the transience of the scene. The heavy, dark clouds suggest an impending downpour, yet the rainbow provides a brief, colourful interruption to the gloom. This juxtaposition of light and shadow, combined with the stylised, almost decorative treatment of the natural elements, aligns with the broader goals of the Mir Iskusstva circle, which sought to revive classical elegance while embracing modern psychological depth. The print captures the fine details of the original watercolour and gouache, preserving the subtle gradations of the sky and the fine line work of the tree branches.
