A serene 1875 realist oil painting by Aleksey Savrasov, capturing the quiet atmosphere of the Russian countryside as a storm clears.
Aleksey Savrasov, a founding member of the Peredvizhniki (the Wanderers), focused his practice on the quiet observation of the Russian countryside. In this 1875 work, he captures the atmospheric transition following a storm. The composition is divided between the heavy, dark clouds retreating to the right and the emerging light that illuminates the grassy slope on the left. A faint rainbow arches over the humble wooden dwellings, providing a subtle contrast to the damp, muddy foreground.
Savrasov avoids the grandiosity often associated with academic painting of the period. Instead, he prioritises the humble details of rural life: the rutted track leading up the hill, the simple wooden structures, and the solitary figure walking through the field. His technique relies on a muted palette of earth tones, greens, and greys, which accurately reflects the specific light conditions of a clearing sky. The paint application is controlled, allowing for a realistic rendering of textures, from the wet earth to the soft, diffused light filtering through the clouds.
This work demonstrates the artist's ability to find beauty in the ordinary. By focusing on the changing weather and the mundane features of the terrain, Savrasov invites the viewer to observe the subtle shifts in the natural world. The painting remains a clear example of the realist approach that defined his career, moving away from romanticised depictions toward a more direct engagement with the environment. It captures a fleeting moment of calm, where the tension of the storm gives way to the quietude of the aftermath. The work is held in the collection of the State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg, where it serves as a representative piece of his mid-career output.
