A seventeenth-century etching by Simon Guillain depicting a hunter with his hounds, rendered with precise line work and period detail.
This etching by the French sculptor and printmaker Simon Guillain depicts a hunter in seventeenth-century attire, accompanied by two hounds. The figure is shown from behind, walking away from the viewer, which allows for a clear observation of the period costume, including the feathered hat, the doublet, and the tall boots. A long staff rests across the hunter's shoulder, while his hand holds the leashes of the dogs, creating a sense of movement and purpose.
Guillain, primarily known for his work in sculpture, produced a series of etchings that capture various figures of his time. This specific plate, numbered 64, demonstrates his technical proficiency with the etching needle. The lines are precise and clean, used to define the texture of the clothing and the fur of the animals. The composition is straightforward, focusing on the silhouette of the hunter against a plain background. This approach removes unnecessary distractions, allowing the viewer to focus on the details of the attire and the relationship between the man and his hunting companions.
Such prints were often produced to document the social types and fashions of the era. The etching process allowed for the reproduction of these observations, making them accessible to a wider audience beyond the immediate circle of the artist. The work reflects the observational nature of Baroque printmaking, where the artist sought to record the world with clarity and structural integrity. The use of cross-hatching to suggest shadow and volume on the hunter's back and legs provides a sense of three-dimensional form, despite the simplicity of the overall scene. This piece is a representative example of the graphic work produced by Guillain during his career in Paris, offering a glimpse into the visual culture of the mid-seventeenth century.
