A dramatic Baroque history painting by Mattia Preti, depicting the legendary Queen Tomyris with the head of Cyrus the Great.
Mattia Preti, a key figure of the Neapolitan Baroque, depicts the legendary moment when Queen Tomyris of the Massagetae receives the severed head of Cyrus the Great. According to Herodotus, the queen sought vengeance for the death of her son by defeating the Persian king in battle and immersing his head in a vessel of blood. Preti captures this narrative with the dramatic lighting and theatrical composition characteristic of his mature period. The painting focuses on the central interaction between the queen and the soldier presenting the trophy. Tomyris, dressed in armour and draped in flowing fabric, gestures toward the basin with a calm, authoritative expression. The soldier, clad in polished steel, kneels to offer the head, creating a strong diagonal line that draws the eye across the canvas. Surrounding figures, including an elderly advisor and onlookers, add to the sense of a staged historical event. Preti employs a palette dominated by deep reds, ochres, and metallic tones, which work in tandem with the stark chiaroscuro to define the forms and textures of the armour, skin, and textiles. Preti spent much of his career in Malta, where his style evolved to incorporate the influence of Caravaggio, particularly in the use of shadow to create volume and emotional weight. This work demonstrates his ability to manage complex multi-figure compositions while maintaining a clear narrative focus. The treatment of the fabric, particularly the heavy red drapery in the background, provides a sense of scale and grandeur. The artist avoids excessive ornamentation, allowing the tension of the scene to remain the primary subject. This fine art print captures the technical precision of Preti's brushwork and the sombre, dramatic atmosphere of the original composition.
