A striking abstract composition by Cy Twombly, featuring fluid yellow drips and delicate graphite markings that evoke the warmth of summer.
Quattro Stagioni, Estate is part of a four-part series created by Cy Twombly between 1993 and 1994. The work represents the season of summer through a specific visual language that balances gestural mark-making with controlled, atmospheric colour. Twombly employs a muted, off-white ground that functions as a field for his characteristic scribbles and calligraphic lines. These marks, rendered in graphite and crayon, suggest the presence of language or poetry without providing legible text.
The composition is dominated by vertical drips of yellow pigment, which descend from concentrated clusters of colour towards the lower edge of the canvas. This technique evokes the heat and intensity associated with the summer months. The application of paint is fluid, allowing gravity to dictate the final form of the drips, while the underlying graphite marks provide a sense of structure and history to the surface.
Twombly, who spent much of his career in Italy, often drew inspiration from classical mythology and the Mediterranean environment. In this series, he engages with the cyclical nature of the seasons, moving away from traditional representation to focus on the sensory experience of time. The work avoids rigid geometry, favouring a loose, rhythmic arrangement that invites the viewer to observe the interaction between the physical paint and the empty space of the canvas. The result is a study in light and movement, where the yellow hues act as a visual shorthand for the warmth of the sun. This piece demonstrates the artist's ability to combine raw, spontaneous energy with a refined sense of composition, maintaining a balance between the chaotic and the deliberate.
