A refined example of Southern Song Dynasty calligraphy by Empress Yang Meizi, featuring a poetic quatrain on yellow roses written in ink on silk.
This work presents a quatrain composed and written by Empress Yang Meizi, a figure of significant cultural authority during the Southern Song Dynasty. The piece is executed in ink on a circular silk fan format, a common medium for courtly poetry and painting of the period. The calligraphy displays the controlled, elegant brushwork characteristic of the imperial style, balancing structural precision with the fluid motion of the ink.
The poem itself reflects the refined aesthetic sensibilities of the Song court, focusing on the delicate nature of yellow roses. The text describes the flowers as having petals like congealed snow and a soft, tender yellow hue, dampened by clear dew. The imagery extends to the surrounding environment, noting how the western wind has swept away the bees and butterflies, leaving the roses to release their fragrance in solitude. This focus on the ephemeral beauty of nature is a hallmark of the era's literary and artistic output.
Surrounding the central text are various red seal impressions. These marks indicate the history of the object, documenting its passage through different imperial collections and the hands of later connoisseurs. The circular composition, or 'tuan shan', was designed to be mounted on a fan handle, serving as both a functional object and a vehicle for artistic expression. The muted, neutral tone of the aged silk provides a subtle backdrop for the dark, rhythmic characters, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay between the written word and the negative space. This piece offers a direct connection to the intellectual life of the Southern Song imperial household, where the practice of calligraphy was an essential component of courtly education and personal expression.
