A refined example of Southern Song Dynasty calligraphy by Empress Yang Meizi, presented on a traditional circular fan format.
This circular fan painting, or tuan shan, features a quatrain written in the elegant, controlled hand of Empress Yang Meizi. As a prominent figure of the Southern Song court, Yang Meizi was a highly regarded calligrapher whose work often appeared on imperial paintings. The text, composed in standard script, reflects the refined literary culture of the period. The characters are spaced with precision, maintaining a balance that allows the ink to sit clearly against the aged silk ground.
The composition is defined by its circular format, a common shape for hand-held fans in the Song Dynasty. The vertical columns of text read from right to left, a traditional arrangement that guides the eye through the poem. Several red seals are visible, indicating the work's provenance and its status within the imperial collection. These seals provide a visual counterpoint to the black ink, adding structure to the overall design.
Yang Meizi's calligraphy is noted for its clarity and poise. The brushwork shows a consistent pressure, resulting in lines that are neither overly dramatic nor hesitant. This piece offers a glimpse into the intellectual life of the Southern Song elite, where poetry and calligraphy were essential pursuits. The work is preserved in a format that was intended for both practical use and aesthetic appreciation. By focusing on the interplay between the written word and the circular frame, the artist creates a sense of harmony. The neutral tone of the silk provides a quiet background, ensuring the focus remains on the rhythm of the characters. This print captures the texture of the original silk and the depth of the ink, offering a faithful reproduction of a significant historical artefact.
