This work is a fan-shaped album leaf featuring the calligraphy of Emperor Gaozong of the Southern Song Dynasty. The text is a quatrain, a four-line poem, written in the running script style. The characters exhibit a fluid, rhythmic quality, reflecting the imperial training in classical brushwork. The ink sits upon a silk ground, which has aged to a warm, muted tone over the centuries.
Emperor Gaozong was a significant patron of the arts, and his own practice of calligraphy was heavily influenced by the masters of the Jin Dynasty, particularly Wang Xizhi. The composition is balanced, with the vertical columns of characters arranged to fit the circular format of the fan. Several red collector seals are visible across the surface, documenting the history of the piece as it passed through various imperial and private collections.
