A dynamic Baroque depiction of the gods on Mount Olympus, featuring robust figures and dramatic lighting by the Flemish master Jacob Jordaens.
This composition by Jacob Jordaens depicts the final scene of the myth of Cupid and Psyche, where Psyche is welcomed into the assembly of the gods on Mount Olympus. Jordaens, a contemporary of Peter Paul Rubens, employs the characteristic Baroque interest in movement, muscular anatomy, and dramatic lighting to organise the figures in a circular arrangement around a central, luminous core. The gods are positioned in a ring, their bodies twisted and foreshortened to create a sense of depth and celestial elevation.
The painting relies on chiaroscuro to define the forms of the deities against the dark, atmospheric background. The warm, golden light emanating from the centre draws the eye to the figures of Jupiter and the eagle, while the surrounding gods, including Neptune with his trident, are rendered with the robust physical presence typical of Jordaens's style. The artist avoids static poses, opting instead for a dynamic, swirling energy that suggests the chaotic joy of a divine banquet.
Jordaens was known for his ability to manage large-scale commissions, and this work demonstrates his proficiency in creating complex, multi-figure compositions that occupy a grand architectural space. The figures are painted with a focus on volume and weight, reflecting the Flemish tradition of celebrating the physical form. The palette is dominated by earthy tones, ochres, and deep shadows, which work together to ground the ethereal subject matter in a tangible, material reality. This print captures the scale and theatricality of the original, offering a view into the mythological narratives that occupied the minds of seventeenth-century European painters.
