A decorative Symbolist painting by Maurice Denis, depicting the mythological moment Psyche discovers the identity of her lover, Cupid.
Maurice Denis, a central figure of the Nabis group, painted this work as part of a series commissioned by Ivan Morozov for his Moscow residence. The scene depicts the classical myth of Psyche, who approaches her sleeping lover, Cupid, with a lamp to reveal his identity. Denis employs a flattened perspective and decorative aesthetic, characteristic of his mature style, which prioritises colour harmony and rhythmic line over traditional illusionism. The composition is framed by an architectural structure, creating a theatrical effect. Psyche is positioned in a kneeling posture, her form rendered with soft, simplified contours. The light from her lamp provides the primary illumination, casting a warm glow across the bed linens and the sleeping figure of Cupid. In the background, a circular medallion featuring three dancing figures adds a classical reference, grounding the narrative in the tradition of mythological painting while maintaining the modern, decorative sensibilities of the early twentieth century. Denis was known for his theory that a painting is essentially a flat surface covered with colours assembled in a certain order. This philosophy is evident here, as the figures and the bed are integrated into a cohesive, patterned arrangement. The floral garlands draped across the foot of the bed and the vertical lines of the curtains contribute to the overall ornamental quality of the piece. The colour palette is dominated by soft purples, warm ochres, and muted pinks, which work together to create a dreamlike atmosphere. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to synthesise religious or mythological themes with the decorative principles of the Nabis, resulting in a balanced, contemplative image that avoids excessive realism in favour of a more poetic, symbolic representation of the myth.
