A fine etching by Bernard Picart after a drawing by Giulio Romano, depicting a scene from the myth of Psyche with expressive, calligraphic lines.
This etching by Bernard Picart depicts a scene from the myth of Psyche, rendered with the fluid, expressive line work characteristic of his printmaking practice. Picart, a French engraver who spent much of his career in Amsterdam, was known for his ability to translate the stylistic qualities of earlier masters into the medium of print. This particular work is based on a drawing by the Italian Renaissance artist Giulio Romano, formerly held in the collection of Mr. Vilenbroeck.
The composition is arranged within a semi-circular frame, a format often used for decorative lunettes or architectural panels. At the centre, the figure of Psyche is shown in a moment of action, surrounded by fantastical creatures that suggest the trials she endured. The line quality is calligraphic and light, capturing the energy of a preparatory sketch rather than a rigid, finished engraving. Picart employs varied hatching to suggest volume and shadow, allowing the viewer to appreciate the underlying structure of the figures and the dynamic interaction between the central protagonist and the surrounding beasts.
As a printmaker, Picart was instrumental in the dissemination of classical and mythological imagery across 18th-century Europe. His work often bridged the gap between the high-minded academic traditions of the Renaissance and the growing public interest in historical and mythological narratives. This print offers a glimpse into the collaborative nature of historical art production, where the vision of a Renaissance master like Romano is reinterpreted through the technical skill of a Baroque engraver. The monochromatic, sepia-toned aesthetic provides a clear focus on the draughtsmanship, making it a suitable addition for those interested in the history of printmaking and classical mythology.
