An illuminated manuscript page featuring King David in prayer, created by the Limbourg brothers for the Belles Heures of the Duc de Berry.
This illumination originates from the Belles Heures of Jean de France, Duc de Berry, a manuscript produced by the Limbourg brothers, Herman, Paul, and Jean. The brothers, originally from Nijmegen, worked primarily in France for the royal court. Their contribution to the development of Northern European painting is evident in the spatial depth and naturalistic detail present in this page.
The scene depicts King David in prayer, a common subject for the opening of the penitential psalms. He is shown kneeling in a verdant, hilly environment, his posture one of humility and devotion. Beside him, a lion stands as a symbolic reference to the biblical narrative. The background features a carefully rendered vista, with trees and distant structures that demonstrate the brothers' interest in atmospheric perspective and the observation of the natural world. The use of colour, particularly the deep reds of the king's robes and the varied greens of the terrain, reflects the high quality of pigments available to the ducal workshop.
To the left of the miniature, the Latin text is written in a formal Gothic script, known as textura. The page is decorated with illuminated initials and borders, which incorporate gold leaf and delicate foliate motifs. These elements serve to frame the central image while maintaining the structural integrity of the manuscript page. The work is a representative example of the luxury book production commissioned by the French nobility during the early fifteenth century. It demonstrates the transition from the flatter, more symbolic styles of the preceding century toward a more observational approach to human figures and their surroundings.
