A page from the Belles Heures, featuring a military procession miniature and decorative Gothic script by the Limbourg brothers.
This page originates from the Belles Heures, a devotional book commissioned by Jean de France, Duc de Berry. The Limbourg brothers, Paul, Herman, and Jean, were the primary artists responsible for the illumination of this manuscript. Their work represents the peak of the International Gothic style, characterised by a synthesis of Northern European naturalism and Italianate spatial awareness.
The page displays a column of Latin text written in a formal Gothic script, punctuated by decorative initials and marginal foliage. The miniature painting depicts a military procession, with figures clad in armour mounted on horses. The composition uses a high horizon line, a common feature in medieval manuscript painting, which allows for a clear view of the figures against a pale blue sky. The use of gold leaf in the initials and the delicate application of pigments on the vellum surface demonstrate the technical precision required for such commissions.
The marginalia features acanthus-style leaves in shades of blue, pink, and gold, which frame the text block. These decorative elements serve to guide the reader through the liturgical content while providing a visual rhythm to the page. The figures in the miniature are rendered with attention to the texture of their armour and the posture of their mounts. This work provides insight into the courtly culture of the early fifteenth century, where the production of such manuscripts was a primary method for displaying wealth and piety. The collaboration between the brothers resulted in a consistent aesthetic, despite the varied nature of the subjects within the book. The preservation of the pigments, particularly the blues and the gold, allows for a clear observation of the original colour palette intended by the artists.
