Proun 1C by El Lissitzky is an abstract composition featuring geometric shapes in a restrained palette of blacks, greys, and whites. This work exemplifies Lissitzky's exploration of spatial relationships and his contribution to the Suprematist movement.
El Lissitzky (1890-1941) was a Russian artist, designer, photographer, typographer, polemicist, and architect. He was an important figure of the Russian avant-garde, helping develop Suprematism with his mentor, Kazimir Malevich, and designing exhibition displays for the movement. Lissitzky's Proun compositions (c. 1919-1924) explored spatial relationships using geometric forms, influencing the Bauhaus and Constructivism movements. He experimented with abstraction, aiming to create a universal visual language. Proun 1C exemplifies Lissitzky's abstract style. The composition features geometric shapes, including squares, rectangles, and lines, arranged in a seemingly floating configuration against a textured off-white background. The colour palette is restrained, with blacks, greys, and whites dominating, punctuated by a small blue square. The arrangement of the shapes creates a sense of depth and dimension, despite the overall flatness of the picture plane. The work reflects Lissitzky's interest in architectural space and his desire to create a dynamic visual experience.
