A detailed 1599 etching by Pieter Bast depicting the western harbour of Amsterdam, featuring merchant ships and figures in exotic dress.
This etching and engraving by Pieter Bast, dated 1599, represents the western portion of a larger, multi-sheet panoramic view of Amsterdam as seen from the IJ. Bast, a Dutch cartographer and engraver, provides a detailed account of the city during a period of rapid maritime expansion. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: the bustling harbour filled with merchant vessels and the foreground, which is populated by figures in exotic attire, including individuals with a camel and various goods, suggesting the global reach of Dutch trade at the turn of the seventeenth century.
The upper section features an elaborate cartouche containing a Latin dedication to the city magistrates, flanked by allegorical figures. The sky is populated by flying putti holding heraldic shields, a common motif in cartographic prints of the era. Bast employs a precise, calligraphic line quality to define the rigging of the ships and the architectural silhouettes of the city in the distance. The foreground figures, rendered with a degree of stylistic exaggeration typical of Northern Mannerism, provide a sense of scale and narrative interest against the backdrop of the busy port.
This print serves as a historical document of Amsterdam's urban development and its identity as a centre of international commerce. The inclusion of numbered keys across the image indicates its function as a reference tool for contemporaries, allowing viewers to identify specific buildings and landmarks. The work captures the transition of the city into a major European power, balancing technical cartographic accuracy with the decorative conventions of the late Renaissance. The print remains a primary source for historians studying the maritime infrastructure and social character of Amsterdam at the end of the sixteenth century.
