Maurice Denis, a central figure of the Nabis group, painted this work during his formative years in Brittany. The composition captures a religious procession, a common subject for the artist, who found inspiration in the devout traditions of the region. Denis employs a flattened perspective and simplified forms, prioritising decorative harmony over realistic representation. This approach aligns with his famous assertion that a painting is essentially a flat surface covered with colours assembled in a certain order. The scene is populated by figures in traditional Breton dress, their silhouettes rendered with rhythmic, flowing lines. The colour palette is deliberate, using muted greens, deep blues, and stark whites to create a contemplative atmosphere. The presence of a large, abstract sun or halo in the upper left corner introduces a symbolic element, suggesting a spiritual dimension beyond the physical act of the procession.
