A formal portrait of Prince Shōtoku holding a ritual incense burner, attributed to the Heian period monk-painter Toba Sōjō.
This portrait depicts Prince Shōtoku, a figure of immense importance in Japanese history and Buddhism, at the age of sixteen. Attributed to the monk-painter Toba Sōjō, the work follows the iconographic traditions of the Heian period. The Prince is shown in a standing position, holding a ritual incense burner, which signifies his devotion and role as a patron of the Buddhist faith. His attire, including the distinctive robes and footwear, reflects the courtly fashion of the era.
The composition is formal and balanced, typical of religious portraiture intended for veneration. The figure occupies the centre of the silk scroll, set against a dark, muted background that draws focus to the subject. The lines are precise, defining the facial features and the folds of the garments with clarity. Despite the passage of time and the natural degradation of the silk, the pigments retain a sense of their original gravity. The use of colour is restrained, relying on deep reds and earthy tones to convey a sense of solemnity.
Toba Sōjō, also known as Kakuyū, was a high-ranking monk of the Tendai school. While he is often associated with the Chōjū-giga scrolls, his work in formal portraiture demonstrates a different facet of his technical ability. This piece provides a window into the aesthetic values of the twelfth century, where religious devotion and artistic expression were closely linked. The scroll remains a significant example of early Japanese portraiture, capturing the idealised image of a historical figure who helped shape the cultural and religious identity of the nation. The mounting of the scroll, with its patterned borders, complements the central image, maintaining the integrity of the original presentation.
