A detailed 18th-century Indian miniature painting from the Mewar school, depicting Prince Amar Singh II riding an elephant.
This miniature painting originates from the Mewar school of Rajasthan, India, dating to approximately 1700. The work depicts Prince Amar Singh II, a ruler of the Mewar kingdom, actively guiding an elephant. The artist, known as the Mewar Stipple Master, employs a distinctive technique involving fine dots of pigment to create texture and shading, particularly visible on the elephant's hide and the figures' garments.
The composition is set against a muted, weathered green background, which provides a neutral field for the central subjects. The elephant is rendered in a dark, solid tone, contrasted by the decorative trappings of gold and red fabric draped across its back. The prince sits forward, holding an ankus (elephant goad), while an attendant sits behind him, holding a fly-whisk. The figures are depicted in profile, a standard convention for the period, yet the artist captures a sense of movement in the elephant's stride.
Technical precision defines the work, from the delicate rendering of the elephant's tusks to the fine details of the prince's turban and patterned tunic. The use of gold leaf adds a subtle luminosity to the jewellery and the elephant's harness. The border of the painting shows signs of age, with a worn, earthy red frame that encloses the scene. This piece reflects the courtly culture of the Mewar region, where equestrian and elephant-riding portraits were common to demonstrate the martial prowess and status of the ruling elite. The stippling technique provides a unique tactile quality that distinguishes this artist from contemporaries who favoured flatter, more uniform colour application. The work remains a fine example of the technical skill present in the royal workshops of the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
