A detailed 1558 engraving by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, depicting the sin of Pride through complex moral allegory and grotesque, imaginative figures.
Pride (Superbia) is a masterful engraving from the series The Seven Deadly Sins, designed by Pieter Bruegel the Elder and executed by the printmaker Pieter van der Heyden. Published by Hieronymus Cock in 1558, this work demonstrates the characteristic Northern Renaissance fascination with moral allegory and grotesque invention.
The composition is crowded with bizarre, hybrid creatures and architectural oddities that populate a desolate, rocky terrain. At the centre, a woman gazes into a mirror, a traditional symbol of vanity, while surrounded by figures that represent various manifestations of pride. The scene is filled with strange, organic structures that resemble giant shells, insects, and mechanical contraptions, reflecting the artist's imaginative approach to visual storytelling. The peacock, positioned prominently near the central figure, serves as a classic iconographic reference to pride and self-importance.
Bruegel employs a high-density visual language where every corner of the frame contains a specific narrative element. The print is not merely a depiction of a sin, but a complex moral commentary on human folly. The Latin inscription at the bottom, which translates to 'No proud person loves those above, nor is loved by them,' provides the thematic anchor for the chaotic imagery. The fine, precise lines of the engraving allow for an extraordinary level of detail, from the textures of the monstrous forms to the expressions of the figures. This print remains a significant example of the print culture in the sixteenth-century Netherlands, where moralising themes were disseminated to a wide audience through the medium of the copperplate engraving.
