Aoki Mokubei, a prominent figure in the Japanese Bunjinga (literati) tradition, produced this fan painting using ink and light colour on paper. The work reflects the aesthetic values of the Edo period, where scholars and artists sought inspiration from Chinese painting styles. The composition follows the fan format, requiring the artist to balance the visual weight across the curved surface.
On the left, dense ink washes define a cluster of trees, their foliage rendered with quick, expressive brushwork. The right side features a craggy mountain formation, suggested through lighter ink tones and dry brush strokes that imply texture and geological structure. The negative space between these elements suggests a mountain gorge, a common motif in literati art that evokes a sense of seclusion and intellectual retreat. The scene is quiet, focusing on the act of preparing tea, an activity closely associated with the scholarly life and the appreciation of nature.
Mokubei was not only a painter but also a skilled potter, and his sensitivity to form and texture is evident in the way he handles the ink.
