A detailed Mannerist engraving by Aegidius Sadeler II, depicting an allegorical figure of divine reward amidst celestial clouds.
This engraving, titled Praemium, is a work by the Flemish printmaker Aegidius Sadeler II. It is based on a design by the painter Peter de Witte, also known as Pietro Candido. The composition presents a complex allegorical figure, likely representing Fortune or Divine Reward, suspended in the heavens. The central figure is depicted with wings, holding a lightning bolt in one hand and a cornucopia overflowing with fruit in the other. She stands atop a sphere, which is flanked by additional wings, suggesting celestial movement and the transient nature of worldly success.
The background features a dramatic arrangement of clouds that frame the central figure, creating a sense of depth and divine presence. Below this celestial scene, a small, detailed landscape shows a classical architectural structure, possibly an amphitheatre or circus, with figures gathered in the foreground. This juxtaposition of the divine and the earthly is a hallmark of the Mannerist style, which often employed elongated figures and sophisticated, symbolic iconography.
Sadeler was a highly skilled engraver who spent much of his career in Prague at the court of Emperor Rudolf II. His technical proficiency is evident in the fine hatching and cross-hatching used to model the figure and the voluminous clouds. The inscription at the base, 'DAT DEVS OMNE BONV, SED NON PER CORNVA TAVRV', provides a moralising context to the image, suggesting that while God provides all good things, they are not necessarily delivered through the horn of a bull. This print demonstrates the collaborative nature of print production during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, where designers and engravers worked in tandem to produce works for a learned audience interested in classical mythology and moral philosophy.
