A striking example of mid-century geometric abstraction, Powhatan by Ward Jackson features sharp, clean lines and a bold blue and lime green palette.
Powhatan is a work by the American artist Ward Jackson, who was a significant figure in the development of geometric abstraction during the mid-twentieth century. Jackson was closely associated with the Guggenheim Museum in New York, where he worked for many years, and his own artistic practice focused on the precise arrangement of form and colour. This piece reflects the principles of hard-edge painting, a style characterised by clean lines and clearly defined transitions between colour fields.
The composition is divided into distinct geometric segments, utilising a high-contrast palette of blue and lime green. By eschewing painterly brushwork or gestural marks, Jackson directs the viewer to the interaction between the shapes themselves. The sharp angles create a sense of tension and balance, typical of the artist's interest in mathematical precision and spatial relationships. The work avoids representational imagery, instead inviting an engagement with the physical properties of the canvas and the optical effect of the chosen hues.
Jackson's approach to painting was methodical, often exploring variations on a theme through series of works. Powhatan demonstrates his ability to reduce a composition to its essential elements while maintaining visual interest through the placement of these forms. The flat application of paint ensures that the focus remains entirely on the geometry and the interplay of the two colours. This work is representative of the broader movement towards abstraction that defined much of the American art scene in the 1960s, where artists sought to strip away narrative content in favour of pure visual experience.
