A detailed 1647 engraving by Crispijn van den Queborn depicting Frederick William, Elector of Brandenburg, based on a painting by Gerard van Honthorst.
This engraving by Crispijn van den Queborn depicts Frederick William, Elector of Brandenburg, often known as the Great Elector. Executed in 1647, the work captures the subject in a formal, oval-framed composition typical of seventeenth-century European portraiture. The artist employs precise line work to define the facial features and the texture of the subject's hair, which falls in soft waves around his shoulders. Frederick William wears a wide, lace-trimmed collar over a garment adorned with ermine fur, signalling his high social and political status. The armour visible beneath the cloak suggests his role as a military leader during a period of significant conflict in Europe.
The surrounding oval frame contains Latin inscriptions, providing the date and the age of the sitter. Below the portrait, a detailed cartouche features an extensive Latin dedication, identifying the subject's numerous titles and roles within the Holy Roman Empire. The engraving technique allows for a clear distinction between the smooth surfaces of the face and the varied textures of the fabric and metal. Van den Queborn, a Dutch engraver, demonstrates technical control in the application of hatching and cross-hatching to create depth and shadow within the monochromatic medium. This print is based on an original painting by Gerard van Honthorst, a connection noted in the text at the base of the sheet. The composition adheres to the conventions of the era, presenting the Elector with a steady, direct gaze that conveys authority and composure. The work provides a clear record of the visual language used to represent power and nobility in the mid-seventeenth century, focusing on the careful rendering of costume and personal likeness.
