A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Lucas Kilian, depicting the military figure Franciscus de Traytorrens in formal attire.
This engraving by Lucas Kilian depicts Franciscus de Traytorrens at the age of forty-one. Kilian, a skilled printmaker from Augsburg, was known for his technical precision in the medium of copperplate engraving. The portrait is presented within an oval frame, a common convention for seventeenth-century portraiture, which allows for a clear focus on the subject's features and attire. The sitter is shown in military dress, reflecting his role as a general and fortification expert in the service of the Swedish crown.
The surrounding cartouche is decorated with ornamental flourishes, typical of the Northern Baroque style. These decorative elements frame the central image, providing a sense of structure and formality. Below the portrait, a Latin inscription provides biographical details, including the sitter's name, age, and professional titles. The use of Latin was standard for such commemorative prints, intended for a learned audience.
Kilian employs fine hatching and cross-hatching techniques to create depth and texture, particularly in the rendering of the lace collar and the metallic sheen of the armour. The contrast between the dark background of the oval and the lighter tones of the face and collar draws the eye directly to the subject. The inclusion of heraldic motifs within the lower corners of the frame adds a layer of personal identification, common in aristocratic and military portraiture of the period. This work is a fine example of the high level of craftsmanship achieved by printmakers in the early seventeenth century, where the marriage of portraiture and decorative engraving served to document the figures of the era with both accuracy and stylistic flair.
