A formal seventeenth-century engraving by Lucas Kilian depicting Ferdinand II, King of Naples, in profile within a decorative cartouche.
This engraving by Lucas Kilian depicts Ferdinand II, King of Naples, presented in profile within a formal oval frame. Kilian, a skilled printmaker from Augsburg, utilised the burin to create a precise, structured image that reflects the conventions of early seventeenth-century portraiture. The monarch is shown wearing a crown and armour, symbols of his authority and military status. The composition is contained within a decorative cartouche, which includes heraldic shields and figures at the base, bearing the inscription 'VICTOR ET TRIVMPHAT'.
The technique demonstrates the technical control characteristic of Kilian's work. The shading is achieved through a system of parallel lines and cross-hatching, which provides volume to the figure and depth to the surrounding frame. The background of the oval is filled with fine, horizontal lines that contrast with the more varied textures of the armour and the facial features. The inclusion of the Roman numeral 'XX' at the top suggests this print was part of a larger series, likely a collection of royal or historical portraits intended for a scholarly or aristocratic audience.
Kilian's approach to the portrait is formal and restrained. The focus remains on the identification of the subject through his regalia and the accompanying heraldry. The engraving provides a clear example of the printmaking styles prevalent in the Holy Roman Empire during the early Baroque period, where the dissemination of such portraits served to establish the visual identity of rulers across European territories. The work is a fine example of the craftsmanship involved in period book illustration and portrait series, where clarity of line and balanced composition were of primary concern to the artist.
