A refined nineteenth-century portrait miniature by Dutch artist Jan Lodewijk Jonxis, depicting a woman in period attire.
This portrait miniature by the Dutch artist Jan Lodewijk Jonxis captures the refined aesthetic of the early nineteenth century. Jonxis, active during a period when the demand for personal portraiture remained high among the middle and upper classes, demonstrates a precise hand in this work. The subject is depicted in a blue dress with puffed sleeves, a style characteristic of the 1830s, complemented by a lace collar and a decorative bonnet.
The medium of watercolour on ivory allowed artists of this era to achieve a luminous quality, particularly in the rendering of skin tones and the delicate textures of lace. Jonxis employs a controlled technique, focusing on the sitter's features and the specific details of her attire. The circular format, common for miniatures of this time, directs the viewer's attention to the subject's face, which is framed by the soft, translucent layers of her headwear.
Miniatures were often commissioned as intimate tokens of affection or family keepsakes. They were designed to be held or kept in private spaces, which explains the high level of detail applied to such a small surface. The artist's signature is visible on the right side of the composition. This piece provides a clear example of the technical skill required to produce portraiture at this scale, balancing the constraints of the medium with the need for a recognisable likeness. The work remains a representative example of Dutch portraiture from the first half of the nineteenth century, reflecting the fashion and social conventions of the period.
