A refined eighteenth-century engraving by Jacob Houbraken, depicting the theologian Christianus Carolus Henricus van der Aa within a formal oval frame.
This engraving by Jacob Houbraken depicts the Dutch theologian Christianus Carolus Henricus van der Aa. Houbraken was a master of the copperplate engraving technique, known for his precise handling of light and shadow to create volume within a two-dimensional space. The portrait is presented within a classic oval frame, a common convention for eighteenth-century portraiture that provides a sense of formal distance and dignity.
The subject is rendered with careful attention to the textures of his clerical attire and the soft curls of his wig. Houbraken employs a system of fine, parallel lines and cross-hatching to model the facial features, achieving a realistic depth that mimics the tonal range of a painting. The background within the oval is subtly shaded to draw the viewer's eye toward the subject's face, while the lower section of the print features a blank cartouche, intended for the inclusion of the sitter's name or biographical details.
Jacob Houbraken was a prolific engraver based in Amsterdam. He is particularly recognised for his contributions to historical publications, including the 'Groote Schouburgh der Nederlantsche Konstschilders en Schilderessen'. His work is characterised by a high degree of technical control and a disciplined approach to the human form. This print reflects the standard of portraiture during the mid-eighteenth century, where the focus remained on the clarity of the sitter's likeness and the clean execution of the engraved lines. The composition is balanced and restrained, adhering to the aesthetic values of the period. This museum-grade reproduction captures the fine detail of the original copperplate, preserving the delicate tonal transitions that define Houbraken's style.
