A formal 18th-century engraving by Martin Bernigeroth depicting the physician and botanist August Quirinus Rivinus.
This engraving by Martin Bernigeroth depicts August Quirinus Rivinus, a German physician and botanist known for his classification system of plants. Bernigeroth, a skilled engraver based in Leipzig, produced numerous portraits of academics and public figures during the early 18th century. His work reflects the technical precision common to the period, utilising fine lines and cross-hatching to create depth and texture within the subject's clothing and the voluminous periwig.
The portrait captures Rivinus in a formal pose, typical of scholarly iconography from the era. The subject wears a cravat and a heavy, draped garment, which provides a contrast to the lighter, more delicate rendering of his facial features. The background is kept simple, allowing the viewer to focus on the sitter's expression and status. Below the portrait, the Latin inscription details his titles, including his role as Dean of the Medical Faculty and his membership in the Royal Society of London. This inclusion of text is a standard feature of 18th-century portrait prints, intended to document the subject's professional standing.
Technically, the print demonstrates the capabilities of copperplate engraving. The varying density of the lines creates a sense of volume in the wig and the folds of the fabric. The shading is methodical, building up tone through controlled strokes rather than washes. This piece offers a clear view into the visual culture of the Enlightenment, where the dissemination of portraits helped to establish the reputation of scientific figures across Europe. The work remains a representative example of the portraiture produced by the Bernigeroth family workshop, which was highly active in documenting the intellectual life of the German states during this period.
