A sixteenth-century woodcut portrait of Antoine, Duke of Burgundy, featuring detailed armour and heraldic iconography.
This woodcut by Jan Molijns depicts Antoine, Duke of Burgundy, standing in full plate armour. The figure holds a halberd in his right hand, his left hand resting upon a large, ornate heraldic shield that displays the quartered arms of the Burgundian house. The subject wears a plumed helmet and a mantle, his posture rigid and formal, typical of sixteenth-century portraiture intended for historical chronicles or genealogical records.
The composition is framed by a decorative border featuring repeating geometric motifs. Below the figure, a block of Dutch text provides biographical details, identifying the subject as the son of Philip the Good. The print exhibits the characteristic linear quality of the woodcut medium, with hatching used to define the metallic surfaces of the armour and the folds of the fabric. The artist employs a clear, graphic approach, prioritising the legibility of the heraldry and the identification of the figure over atmospheric depth.
Such prints were often produced as illustrations for historical texts or broadsides, serving to document the lineage of the nobility. The inclusion of the coat of arms functions as a visual shorthand for the subject's status and dynastic connections. The work reflects the technical conventions of Flemish printmaking during the mid-sixteenth century, where the woodcut remained a primary method for disseminating portraiture and historical information to a wider audience. The print is preserved in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, demonstrating the archival nature of these early modern graphic works.
