A fine mezzotint portrait of the clergyman Josias van der Kapelle, presented within a classical trompe l'oeil frame.
This mezzotint depicts Josias van der Kapelle, a Dutch clergyman, captured in a formal bust-length pose. The subject is positioned within a trompe l'oeil oval frame, which rests upon a stone plinth. This compositional choice mimics the appearance of a sculpted relief, a common convention in seventeenth-century portraiture to convey gravity and status. Van der Kapelle wears the traditional attire of a minister, including a dark doublet with a row of buttons and a white, flat collar. His hair is styled in the long, flowing fashion typical of the late seventeenth century.
The mezzotint technique allows for a range of tonal values, from deep blacks to soft greys. Thomas van der Wilt uses these gradations to model the subject's features and the texture of his clothing. The light source, coming from the upper left, creates a gentle illumination across the face and the collar, while the rest of the figure recedes into shadow. This approach creates a sense of volume and physical presence. The artist focuses on the sitter's expression, which appears calm and composed, reflecting the decorum expected of a religious figure during this period.
Van der Wilt, active in Delft, produced works that align with the technical developments of printmaking in the Netherlands. The print demonstrates the precision required for mezzotint, where the artist works from dark to light by smoothing the burred surface of the copper plate. The result is a smooth, velvety finish that avoids the harsh lines of engraving or etching. This print provides a clear example of how portraiture functioned as a medium for recording the appearance of public figures, ensuring their likeness remained accessible to their congregation and peers.
