A refined wood engraving by Timothy Cole, reproducing Edmond Aman-Jean's portrait of his wife with delicate tonal precision.
This wood engraving by Timothy Cole reproduces the painting 'Portrait of the Artist's Wife' by the French Symbolist painter Edmond Aman-Jean. Cole, a master of the wood engraving medium, was widely recognised for his ability to translate the tonal qualities of oil paintings into the precise, linear language of the block. His work often appeared in publications such as The Century Magazine, where he introduced American audiences to European masterpieces.
The image depicts a woman in profile, seated in a relaxed posture. Her gaze is directed away from the viewer, creating a sense of quiet introspection. The background is rendered with a soft, atmospheric texture that contrasts with the sharper definition of the figure. Cole employs a sophisticated system of cross-hatching and varied line weights to replicate the subtle play of light across the subject's dress and the soft contours of her face. The original painting by Aman-Jean is held in the collection of the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris, a detail noted in the handwritten inscription at the base of the print.
This particular impression includes a personal dedication from Cole to his friend, N.W. Scott. The technical execution demonstrates the high level of skill required for late nineteenth and early twentieth-century reproductive engraving. By using a burin to carve into the end-grain of boxwood, Cole achieved a range of greys and mid-tones that mimic the fluidity of brushwork. The composition relies on a gentle balance between the dark, solid mass of the skirt and the lighter, more ethereal treatment of the upper body and background. It is a fine example of the intersection between traditional craft and the dissemination of fine art through print media during the Edwardian period.
