A formal eighteenth-century portrait by Antoine Pesne, depicting Teofila Działyńska in a detailed gown with period accessories.
Antoine Pesne, a French painter who spent much of his career in Prussia, produced this portrait of Teofila Działyńska during the mid-eighteenth century. The work reflects the conventions of aristocratic portraiture common to the Rococo period. The subject is depicted in a formal setting, wearing a voluminous gown that emphasises the fashion of the era. Her pose is composed, with one hand resting upon the fabric of her dress and the other holding a fan, a typical accessory for women of her social standing.
The composition employs a dark, atmospheric background that contrasts with the lighter tones of the subject's attire. Pesne focuses on the texture of the lace and the sheen of the fabric, demonstrating his technical ability to render materials. The inclusion of a stone pedestal and a small table suggests an interior environment, perhaps a gallery or a private chamber. The lighting is directed to draw attention to the face and the upper portion of the gown, creating a sense of volume and presence.
This portrait provides a view into the visual culture of the Polish-Lithuanian nobility during the eighteenth century. Pesne, who served as the court painter to Frederick the Great, was known for his ability to capture the likenesses of the elite. His approach here is formal, yet it retains a degree of individual character. The painting remains a record of the aesthetic preferences and social hierarchies of the time, documenting the sartorial choices and the formal presentation expected of a noblewoman in this period.
