This mezzotint depicts Sir Peter Lely, the pre-eminent portrait painter in Restoration England. Born in Soest, Westphalia, to Dutch parents, Lely moved to London in the early 1640s. He quickly established himself as the successor to Anthony van Dyck, capturing the likenesses of the aristocracy and the royal court with a distinctively fluid, painterly approach.
