A sensitive 1876 portrait by Ivan Kramskoy depicting his young son, Sergei, dressed in a formal military uniform.
Ivan Kramskoy, a central figure in the Peredvizhniki movement, painted this portrait of his son, Sergei, in 1876. The work captures the young boy dressed in a miniature military uniform, a common stylistic choice for nineteenth-century portraiture that often reflected the aspirations or social standing of the family. Kramskoy employs a dark, moody background that contrasts with the lighter tones of the boy's face and hair, drawing the viewer's attention to the subject's expression.
The composition is straightforward, placing Sergei in a standing position within a natural setting. The uniform, complete with epaulettes and brass buttons, is rendered with precise attention to detail, demonstrating the artist's technical skill in handling textures and light. The dark coat provides a solid visual anchor, while the soft, blurred greenery behind him suggests an outdoor environment without distracting from the figure.
Kramskoy was known for his psychological depth in portraiture, and this work is no exception. Despite the formal attire, the boy's gaze remains gentle and contemplative. The painting reflects the artist's ability to balance the demands of formal portraiture with a personal, intimate connection to his subject. The muted colour palette, dominated by deep blues, blacks, and earthy greens, creates a sense of quiet gravity. This piece remains a fine example of Russian realism from the late nineteenth century, showcasing the artist's focus on human character and precise observation.
