A fine seventeenth-century engraving by Gérard Edelinck, capturing the portrait of Pierre Simon with technical precision and period detail.
This engraving by Gérard Edelinck depicts Pierre Simon, a contemporary engraver and contemporary of the artist. Edelinck, a Flemish master who spent much of his career in Paris under the patronage of Louis XIV, is widely recognised for his technical precision in the medium of copperplate engraving. This work demonstrates his ability to render texture and light through the systematic application of lines, cross-hatching, and varying pressure.
The subject is presented in a three-quarter view, wearing the elaborate periwig characteristic of the late seventeenth century. The artist captures the volume of the hair through dense, rhythmic lines that follow the curls, creating a sense of weight and movement. The facial features are modelled with subtle gradations of tone, achieved by the careful spacing of the burin strokes. The sitter wears a cravat with fine lace detailing, which contrasts with the darker, broader folds of his coat. The inclusion of the order on his chest provides a specific social context for the sitter, indicating his status.
At the base of the composition, a cartouche contains the Latin inscription, Petrus Simon Eques Romanus Sculp. regius, which identifies the subject and his professional titles. The framing of the portrait within a rectangular border, combined with the trompe-l'oeil effect of the lower ledge, is a common convention in seventeenth-century printmaking. This approach provides a sense of physical presence to the subject. Edelinck's work remains a primary example of the high level of craftsmanship achieved by reproductive printmakers during the reign of the Sun King, where the translation of painted portraits into black and white media required both artistic sensitivity and mechanical discipline. The print is a study in the control of light and shadow, demonstrating the capacity of the engraved line to define form and character.
