A sensitive lithographic portrait of the painter Pierre Bonnard, rendered in profile by the French Symbolist artist Odilon Redon.
This lithograph by Odilon Redon captures the likeness of the painter Pierre Bonnard in profile. Redon, a figure associated with the Symbolist movement, is often recognised for his dreamlike, monochromatic works, yet this portrait demonstrates his ability to render a realistic subject with sensitivity and restraint. The composition focuses entirely on the head of the sitter, set against a plain, unadorned background. This choice directs the viewer's attention to the subtle modelling of the facial features and the texture of the hair and beard.
Redon employs a soft, atmospheric application of lithographic crayon. The marks are layered to create depth, particularly around the eye and the shadow cast by the nose. The edges of the form are not sharply defined, allowing the image to emerge gently from the paper. This technique provides a sense of quietude and introspection, characteristic of Redon's approach to portraiture. Unlike his more fantastical subjects, this work remains grounded in observation, providing a clear record of the artist's contemporary.
Pierre Bonnard, a member of the Nabis group, shared an interest in the expressive potential of colour and form with Redon. This portrait serves as a record of their professional acquaintance within the Parisian art circles of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The print reflects the technical mastery Redon achieved in the medium of lithography, which he referred to as his 'noirs'. By manipulating the greasy crayon on the stone, he achieved a range of grey tones that mimic the softness of charcoal or chalk. The result is a portrait that feels both immediate and timeless, capturing the essence of the sitter through a delicate balance of light and shadow.
