A refined 18th-century portrait by Dmitry Levitzky, depicting Natalia Borshchova in a theatrical pose during her time at the Smolny Institute.
This portrait depicts Natalia Borshchova, a student at the Smolny Institute for Noble Maidens in Saint Petersburg. Dmitry Levitzky, a master of 18th-century Russian portraiture, captures the subject in a moment of performance. Borshchova is shown in a theatrical pose, likely reflecting her participation in the school's dramatic productions, which were a regular feature of the curriculum under the patronage of Catherine the Great.
The composition is defined by the contrast between the dark, heavy fabric of the gown and the muted, atmospheric background. Levitzky demonstrates his technical skill in the rendering of textures, particularly the sheen of the dark velvet and the delicate lace at the collar. The subject's expression is one of youthful confidence, directed towards the viewer with a subtle, knowing smile. Her posture, with one arm extended and a foot positioned as if in a dance step, suggests movement frozen in time.
Levitzky was known for his ability to convey the individual character of his sitters while adhering to the formal requirements of aristocratic portraiture. This work is part of a larger series commissioned to document the pupils of the Smolny Institute. The painting avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the interplay of light across the fabric and the naturalistic depiction of the subject's features. The architectural element on the left provides a sense of depth, grounding the figure within a structured space. This piece remains a primary example of the artist's mature style, characterised by a balance of psychological insight and refined painterly technique.
