A refined portrait by Gustav Klimt, depicting Marie Henneberg in a tiered lace gown against an atmospheric, pointillist background.
Gustav Klimt painted this portrait of Marie Henneberg, the wife of the photographer Hugo Henneberg, between 1901 and 1902. The work captures the subject in a relaxed, seated pose, leaning slightly against the back of an armchair. Her attire is dominated by a voluminous, tiered lace collar and dress, which Klimt renders with a focus on texture and light. A single, distinct blue flower pinned to her bodice provides a sharp chromatic contrast against the otherwise cool, monochromatic palette of greys, blues, and whites.
The background is treated with a characteristic pointillist technique, creating a soft, atmospheric haze that pushes the figure forward. This approach minimises traditional depth, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay between the sitter's calm expression and the decorative quality of her clothing. Klimt, a founding member of the Vienna Secession, moved away from academic realism during this period, favouring a more subjective and stylised representation of his subjects. The brushwork is varied, ranging from the precise rendering of the lace to the looser, more abstract application of paint in the surrounding space.
Marie Henneberg was a member of the Viennese social circle that supported the Secessionists. Klimt's depiction avoids the rigid formality often associated with portraiture of the era, opting instead for a sense of quiet intimacy. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the lace tiers countered by the horizontal orientation of the sitter's posture. This piece remains a clear example of Klimt's transition into his mature style, where the decorative elements of the canvas begin to hold as much weight as the subject herself.
