A formal seventeenth-century engraving by Lucas Kilian, depicting Marcus Ulstet within an ornate, heraldic cartouche.
This engraving by Lucas Kilian depicts Marcus Ulstet, a figure of authority in Augsburg. Kilian, a member of a prominent family of engravers based in Augsburg, demonstrates his technical precision through the controlled use of hatching and cross-hatching to define the textures of the subject's fur-lined garment and the soft contours of his face. The portrait is contained within an oval frame, a common convention for formal portraiture of the period, which bears a Latin inscription identifying the sitter and his status.
The surrounding cartouche is highly decorative, incorporating heraldic elements and scrollwork that reflect the aesthetic preferences of the early seventeenth century. Four smaller shields are positioned at the corners of the frame, providing additional genealogical context for the sitter. Below the oval, a larger coat of arms serves as a base for the composition, flanked by small cherubic figures. This arrangement creates a sense of balance and formality, typical of the commemorative portrait prints produced by the Kilian workshop for the civic and academic elite of the Holy Roman Empire.
Kilian's work is characterised by a clarity of line and a disciplined approach to shading. The engraving captures the gravity of the subject, whose expression is one of sober contemplation. The attention to detail in the rendering of the fabric and the heraldic motifs demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship expected of professional printmakers during this era. This print offers a clear view into the visual culture of the period, where portraiture functioned as a means of documenting lineage and public office. The composition remains focused on the sitter, while the ornate frame provides a structured environment that elevates the status of the individual portrayed.
