A refined nineteenth-century stipple engraving by Ambroise Tardieu, depicting the French politician Marc-René de Voyer de Paulmy d'Argenson.
This portrait depicts Marc-René de Voyer de Paulmy d'Argenson, a French politician who served as a deputy for the Haut-Rhin department. The work is an example of early nineteenth-century French printmaking, utilising a combination of etching and stipple engraving techniques to achieve subtle tonal gradations. Ambroise Tardieu, a cartographer and engraver, captures the subject within a classic oval frame, a common format for political portraiture of the era.
The engraving focuses on the facial features and formal attire of the sitter, reflecting the restrained aesthetic of the period. The stipple technique, which involves the use of small dots to create shading, allows for a soft transition between light and shadow, particularly visible in the modelling of the face and the texture of the coat. The inclusion of the subject's name and political title beneath the image identifies him as a figure of public interest following his election in 1817.
As a historical document, this print provides insight into the visual culture of the Bourbon Restoration. The composition is balanced and direct, prioritising clarity and formal representation over decorative elements. The paper shows signs of age, consistent with its production period, and the clean lines of the engraving demonstrate the technical precision expected of professional printmakers in Paris during the early 1800s. This piece is suitable for those interested in French political history or the evolution of portrait engraving techniques.
