A formal mid-eighteenth-century portrait of Major Foubert by Thomas Hudson, featuring the subject in military attire.
Thomas Hudson was a dominant figure in the mid-eighteenth-century British portrait market. This work depicts Major Foubert, a military officer, captured in a three-quarter length pose that reflects the conventions of the period. Hudson employs a formal arrangement, placing the subject against a dark, atmospheric background that directs attention to the sitter's face and attire. The Major wears a breastplate over a military coat, with gold-braided lapels and red cuffs, signalling his rank and professional status. His powdered wig, a standard element of the era's fashion, frames a composed expression.
Hudson was known for his ability to manage a busy studio, often delegating the painting of drapery and backgrounds to assistants while he focused on the likeness of the sitter. His style is characterised by a clear, controlled application of paint and a focus on the social standing of his subjects. The lighting in this portrait is directed to highlight the metallic sheen of the armour and the texture of the fabric, creating a sense of volume. The composition is balanced, with the Major's hand resting on a stone plinth, a common device in portraiture to provide stability and a sense of physical presence. This piece offers a view into the visual language of the British military elite during the mid-1700s, prioritising clarity and traditional representation over experimental techniques. The palette remains grounded in earth tones, with the red accents providing a necessary contrast to the dark coat and the muted background. This portrait remains a representative example of the professional portraiture that defined the career of Hudson before the rise of his most famous pupil, Joshua Reynolds.
