A refined profile portrait of Maharaja Pratap Singh of Jaipur, rendered in opaque watercolour and gold by the court artist Sahib Ram.
This work is a profile portrait of Maharaja Pratap Singh of Jaipur, executed in the distinct style of the Jaipur court atelier. Sahib Ram, a court painter active during the late eighteenth century, was known for his ability to capture the likeness of royalty while adhering to the formal conventions of Rajput miniature painting. The composition presents the ruler in a strict profile view, a standard convention for royal portraiture in this region, which allows for the clear display of his status and regalia.
The Maharaja is depicted wearing an elaborate turban adorned with jewels and a plume. His neck and chest are draped in multiple strands of pearls, interspersed with precious stones. The artist employs a fine, controlled line to delineate the facial features, including the sharp curve of the nose and the precise shape of the eye. The use of gold leaf and mineral pigments provides a sense of material luxury, reflecting the wealth of the Jaipur court.
While the face is rendered with a degree of naturalism, the body remains somewhat schematic, with the focus directed toward the ornamentation and the symbolic representation of power. The background is left largely unadorned, which directs the viewer's attention to the subject. This piece provides insight into the artistic practices of the Jaipur school, where portraiture functioned as a record of lineage and authority. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the historical character of the work. It remains a clear example of the technical skill required to balance decorative detail with the requirements of formal portraiture in the Indian court tradition.
