A refined reproduction of Pierre-Paul Prud'hon's 1792 portrait of Madame Copia, capturing the soft lighting and elegant composition of the original.
This print reproduces the 1792 portrait of Madame Copia by the French painter Pierre-Paul Prud'hon. The original painting, which was exhibited at the Salon of 1793, captures the subject in a seated pose, turned slightly towards the viewer. Madame Copia wears a structured bonnet, a common fashion accessory of the late eighteenth century, which frames her face and directs attention to her expression. The artist employs soft, atmospheric lighting to model the figure, creating a gentle transition between the subject and the darkened background.
Prud'hon was known for his ability to infuse Neoclassical subjects with a sense of softness and emotional resonance. Unlike the rigid lines often associated with the period, his work frequently features sfumato-like transitions and a focus on the play of light across fabric and skin. This reproduction, published in the Gazette des Beaux-Arts, captures the tonal qualities of the original oil painting through the medium of etching and engraving. The fine lines of the print mimic the brushwork of the painter, preserving the delicate textures of the sitter's gown and the lace of her headwear.
The composition is balanced and restrained, reflecting the aesthetic preferences of the era. Madame Copia is depicted with a calm, composed demeanour, her hands resting quietly in her lap. The print serves as a record of both the fashion of the time and the stylistic approach of Prud'hon, who remained a distinct figure in French art during the transition from the Ancien Régime to the Napoleonic era. The work remains a study in the application of light and shadow to define form, demonstrating the artist's technical control over the medium of portraiture.
