This engraving by Pieter van Schuppen, dated 1663, depicts Louis XIV of France. The composition follows the conventions of seventeenth-century royal portraiture, placing the monarch within an oval frame. The central figure is rendered with precision, capturing the elaborate wig and armour characteristic of the period. The portrait is surrounded by an extensive array of military trophies, including cannons, helmets, and banners, which serve to communicate the martial authority of the Sun King.

Below the central oval, two putti support the royal coat of arms of France, featuring the fleur-de-lis. The entire arrangement is framed by a laurel wreath, topped with a crown and crossed sceptres. The technical execution demonstrates the mastery of the burin, with varied line weights used to define the textures of metal, fabric, and skin. The work is based on a design by Pierre Mignard, whose influence is visible in the formalised posture and the balanced distribution of the surrounding decorative elements.

Van Schuppen was a Flemish engraver who spent much of his career in Paris, where he became a member of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. His work often involved the reproduction of paintings by contemporary masters, translating the tonal qualities of oil on canvas into the linear language of copperplate engraving. This specific print reflects the visual propaganda of the French court, where the image of the monarch was carefully constructed to project stability and power.
